What's Wrong?
If you say it loud enough, do you think you will be able to
convince yourself? When you share your passionate opinions around heavy topics on
social media, what is the purpose of this is? I ask this because of all the shared
posts, memes, retweets I have seen, zero percent of them
have caused me to change my mind on any matter and I would be willing to bet
that the same percentage have changed your mind as well. If I am wrong, I
would truly love to hear your story about how a meme you saw on social media changed
your mind or heart about a serious matter (shoot me a message). Don’t get me wrong, some people share their personal stories, some hard stories, stories that they have
lived through and these experiences can and should give us pause and we should listen to
people when they share their stories, really listen. What I am really addressing is the regurgitated thoughts being shared out there and sometimes people
sharing one meme after another on the same topic. You have come through loud
and clear. We know how you feel. I don’t think you’re taking any new passengers
with you on that train of thought. It makes me wonder who you are trying to convince,
and I can only conclude that you are trying to convince yourself. You are
trying to convince yourself that you are right. So many people are out there being so
loud that you can’t even hear anything above the noise. Both sides of any
argument or debate always seem to think that they are right and being 'right' seems to take precidence over everything else. How does one even determine what is right and what is wrong? We obviously can’t gauge right and wrong
by our feelings because we all have very different feelings and feelings can change, but right and wrong are always right and wrong. That doesn’t
change. We need one decisive way to determine right from wrong. I personally only know of one way to do this, one way that has remained, unshaken, unchanged. It is in God's word and thankfully God gave us the Bible and in the Bible He
clearly points out what is right and what is wrong. A few examples:
Exodus 20:12-17 “Honor your father and your mother, so that
you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not
murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give
false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s
house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant,
his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment
in the Law?” Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest
commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All
the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one
another above yourselves.
God lays out some clear examples of the things we are not
supposed to do and the things we are supposed to do. We cannot change God’s
mind on what He says is right. We cannot deceive God by calling something by a
different name or trying to paint it in a different way. We cannot make excuses
for wrong. I am not writing this to judge anyone, not even to judge the sharing
of memes. You can continue to share memes that are the direct opposite of what
I believe, and I will still love you. I will still call you my friend. I will not
block you. I will not try to make you feel bad for the way you think or believe.
I am not a judge. Only God can truly judge any of us, but make no mistake about
this, He will.
Ecclesiastes 3:17 I said to myself, “God will bring into
judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every
activity, a time to judge every deed.”
Romans 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and your
unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s
wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
Perhaps this sounds scary, but the good news is that as long
as we are breathing life on this earth, there is not one of these wrongdoings
that God will not forgive if we truly repent and ask for His forgiveness. He
wants to forgive you. He wants you to turn your heart over to Him. He loves you
and He has been trying to get your attention.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
